“나의 어린 시절의 소망은 이 세상의 모든 바다에 내 발가락을 살짝 담가 보는 것 이였다. 그때는 어려서 몰랐지만 지금 생각하면 너무 무리한 소망 일수도 있다. 그러나 지금도 나는 바다(호수)를 접하게 되면, 아무도 보고 있지 않은 틈을 타서 후다닥 양말을 벗고 발가락을 물에 적셔본다. 그것이 내 본연의 동심이기 때문이다.”

네덜란드 화가 이디뜨 반 루(EDITH VAN LOO)는 세계 곳곳을 여행하며 그 곳에서의 인상과 경험에서 비롯된 기억을 그린다. 그녀는 <2019 부산국제아트페어(BIAF)>에 참가해 여행에서 만난 자연과 사물, 친구들에 관한 여러 작품을 선보여 주목받았다.
그녀의 그림은 이국적인 풍경만 그리지는 않는다. 여러 나라의 문화와 사람을 접하고 곳곳산재한 아름다운 풍경을 자신만의 인상을 담아 추억이 담긴 기억을 되새기며 화폭에 담는다. 그녀가 보는 그림 속 세상의 풍경에 대한 이야기를 들어보자.

Q. 세계 여러 곳을 여행한 당신의 여행지는 주로 어떤 곳입니까? 특히 인상 깊었던 곳과 사람들이라면?
마음의 문을 열면 어디를 가든지 볼 수 있는 아름다운 것들이 산재해있다. 비록 나는 모든 곳을 각각 다르게 기억한다. 하지만 나는 이번의 한국 방문을 많은 이유로 정말 소중히 여길 것이다. 한국 사람들은 매우 친절하고 그들의 환대는 최고의 수준 이였다. 진실로 마음이 따뜻해지는 경험 그 자체 이었다. 게다가 한국사람들은 아주 심미적 감성이며 한국음식도 정말 최고라고 믿는다.

- 여러 나라의 문화와 사람들을 통해 본 공통의 비슷한 점과 다른 점이 있다면 무엇일까요?
나는 이 세상의 모든 사람들이 본질적으로 같은 감정, 욕망, 두려움을 가지고 있다고 믿는다. 그것을 우리가 어떻게 다르게 접근하느냐에 따라 나의 여행을 흥미롭게 만든다. 내가 그 나라의 언어를 구사하지 못하더라도, 항상 같이 느끼는 공통점을 통해 다른 사람들과 생각을 나누는 관계를 맺을 수 있다고 생각한다.
- 요즘 특히 관심을 갖는 것이라면?
남편이 네델란드 군인이라 현재 카라카스 가 수도인 베네수엘라에 2년 전부터 주둔중이다. 이 나라는 경제적으로 피폐하고 인도적인 엄청난 위기에 처해 있다. 내가 그들의 언어를 배우지 않으면 삶이 너무 어려워지므로 일주일에 두 번은 스페인어를 배우고 있다. 또한 사진 찍는 것을 좋아하며 매일 한 장씩 인스타그램에 사진을 올리는 것도 좋아한다.
물론 영원히 그곳에서 거주하지는 않겠지만 지금 현재의 베네수엘라에는 많은 것들이 부족하고 삶이 복잡해졌기 때문에 정상적인 삶을 위해 적응하려면 상당한 시간이 걸리는 상황이다. 최근에 손녀가 탄생하여 나는 외할머니가 되었다. 물론 손녀와는 멀리 떨어져 살고 있지만 손녀가 생긴 그런 기쁨이 있어 좋다.

- <old friends> 속 아이들의 표정은 어둡고 우울해 보이는데?
내가 어떤 흐름 속에 있어야 한다는 것을 그림으로 표현 하려면 나는 나의 내면에서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지, 내 기분이 어떤 지에 초점을 맞춰야 한다. 나에게 있어 '오랜 친구들’은 가장 중요한 삶의 하나이다. 그림의 배경은 우리가 이사 할 때 사용하는 박스로 표현했고 왜냐면 우리는 3~4년마다 주둔 국가가 달라서 항상 이사를 가야한다. 나는 짐을 꾸릴 때마다 필요한 것만 챙기는데 그 박스 안에 챙겨야 할 것은 솔직히 나에게 가장 중요한 가족과 친구들이다. 3년에서 4년마다 나는 그들에게 작별 인사를 해야 하고, 새로운 장소에서 또 다시 새로운 친구들을 사귀어야 한다. 이 아이들은 사실 나의 조카들로써, 가족을 대표해서 표현했다. 색깔은 흑백 사진처럼 오래된 친구들을 나타내기 위해 이 세피아 색상을 사용하였다.
이 그림을 그릴 당시엔 특별히 슬픈 느낌이 있어서 그린 것은 아니지만 그와 동시에 나는 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 항상 같이하지 못하는 것이 때때로 어렵다는 것을 알게 되었고, 그 감정의 표현이라고 생각한다. 나에게 있어 이 그림은 우정을 소중히 하고, 나에게 소중한 사람들을 보호하는 데 큰 의미가 있다 (그래서 우리 군인 남편이 쓰는 헬멧을 그려서 보호의 의미를 표현했다) 그림에 대한 이해는 그림을 보는 이에 따라 각각 다르게 보여지고 느껴 진다는 것은 정말 신기롭다.

- 부산국제아트페어에 참가한 소감은?
나는 각각 20시간 이상 걸리는 비행기를 두 번 갈아타고 그 어려운 베네수엘라 검문을 통과해 왔다. BIAF에 참여하는 것은 나에게 큰 모험 자체이었다. 부산에 도착했던 순간, 내가 실지로 한국에 무사히 도착했다는 것을 믿을 수가 없었다. 전시회에 출품한 다른 참가자들의 수준 높은 예술작품은 내겐 감동의 쓰나미 였다. 뛰어난 예술가들과 만나고, 예술에 대해 서로의 견해를 나누는 그 소소한것 조차도 매우 흥미로웠다. 전시회에서 그렇게 많은 예술가들을 다 함께 만나는 일은 정말 멋진 일이다. 게다가 한국인들의 환대는 그 어떤 나라 사람도 따라 잡을수 없을 정도로 감동적 이였다. 나는 K-Art 의 이사장님을 비롯하여 모든 관계자분들에게 작가들을 지지해주시고 초대 그리고 따뜻한 환영에 진심으로 감사한다. 정말 솔직히 말씀드리면 나는 전시회 기간의 매 순간을 사랑했다고 말할 수 있다.

1.What is your favorite place to travel around the world? What about people that where particularly impressive?
My favorite place? That is a big question. If you open your heart there are beautiful things to see wherever you go. Although I remember every place for different things. I will treasure my trip to Korea for a lot of reasons. Korean people are very kind and their hospitality is the max! It has all been an heartwarming adventure. For all that I have seen I believe Koreans are also very aesthetic and the food is delicious too.
2. What is the difference between cultures and people of different countries?
I believe that people are essentially the same, with the same feelings, desires and fears. It is about how we approach things differently what makes travelling so interesting for me. Even if I don’t speak a language I think I always can relate to others in what we have in common.
3. What is your particular interest these days?
Besides painting? Since 2 years I live in Caracas Venezuela. The country is in a economical and humanitarian crisis. It is important to me to learn to speak their language, so two mornings in a week I’m going to class. I also love photography and love to post a picture daily on Instagram.
There are many things lacking in Venezuela and life has become complicated, therefore trying to have a ‘normal’ life takes quite some time. Recently I have also become a grandmother, unfortunately she lives far from us. To see my family I have to travel.
4. The faces in your painting don't look very lively (old friends), why is that?
To paint I need to be in a certain flow, I have to focus on what’s going on inside, how do I feel? ‘ Old friends’ for me, is about the things that matters to me most. The background is like one of these boxes we use when we are moving again. We move every 3 to 4 years. Whenever I’m packing I only pack what is necessary. Frankly, I found that what matters to me most are relations, family and friends. Every 3 to 4 years I have to say goodbye and make new friends again in a new place. These children are actually my niece and nephew, representing family. I used these sepia colours, like in black and white photographs, to represent old friends. I can not recall a particular sad feeling when I painted. At the same time I find it hard sometimes to not be with my beloved ones. Maybe that shows. For me this painting means a lot, to cherish friendship, to protect those who are dear to me (the helmet represents protection).
Also from experience I can tell that how a painting is perceived might be different by different viewers.
5. Is there anything you would like to convey or share with your audience through your paintings?
When I paint I don’t aim for an emotion or certain respond from viewers. That is not how it works for me. Sometimes I get inspriration through a dream, sometimes I paint because I like to remember something that's on my mind. Or a feeling. Painting makes me feel good. Nature is a never ending source of inspiration for me, and so are people, I hope that shows.
6. How did you feel about participating in BIAF?
Participating in BIAF has been a great adventure for me. I came from far, two flight of more than 20 hours each. When I reached Busan I couldn’t believe I made it, carrying all my work with me. I was blown away by the high level of art work of other participants. It has been so interesting to meet with other brilliant artists, to talk to people about art. It is just wonderful to find so many artlovers at the fair. Korean hospitility is inimitable. I’m especcialy grateful to all the people of K-Art for their support, the invitation and warm welcome. I can honestly say that I loved every minute of it.
7. A brief discription of Tipping toe.
It is about my childhood wish to dip my toe in every ocean in this world. Nowadays I accept that this dream is to much to ask for, but whenever I see an ocean (or even a big lake) and nobody is watching, I take of my socks and put my toe in the water. I like to be remembered of my inner- child .
